16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is an international campaign to challenge violence against women and girls around the world. The campaign runs every year from November 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to December 10 (International Human Rights Day). The international campaign originated from the first Women's Global Leadership Institute coordinated by the Center for Women's Global Leadership in 1991.
In Nigeria this year, the European Union and its Member States, The Royal Norwegian Embassy and High Commission of Canada have collaborated to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights around the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign. The theme for this year's campaign is #HerStoryOurStory.
The campaign will ask the question: "What will you do to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls in your community?" and focus on:
The campaign rationale is based on the understanding that one of the most important ways to change the perception of people is to influence their attitude and behaviours. We are letting girls and boys, men and women with influence talk to the public and tell them “No More” to gender-based violence.
Notable Nigerian personalities have been selected as influencers to create an online conversation with the back story of ending gender-based violence. On November 25, 2018 influencers will sign the pledge against gender-based violence, share on their social media pages and challenge their friends to do the same also, using the hashtags #HerStoryOurStory and #EU4HerNG.
